There are many signs you can look for to know the school year has begun in earnest. The turn of leaves from earthy green to dirty yellow, the nip of windy air at dusk and dawn. However, one such harbinger of the school year that may have been overlooked is the first Club Day.
Club Day is a school-wide event taking place roughly every month, coordinated by teachers, students, and administrative officials to create a menagerie of different organizations for students to join. From Habitat for Humanity to Herpetology, there’s something for everyone here at Blacksburg High School!
As a student here at BHS, I was one of the many participants in Club Day, and as such I had the opportunity to interview Tess Larsen, the president of Photography Fiends. “We started it because the old photography teacher retired a few years back, and we really wanted to do something with photography, and so the club was born!” In addition to the photography club, Tess is the president of the Women’s Healthcare Rights Club. “We focus on legal advocacy and social advocacy for improving healthcare rights. [...] Last year we did a period supply drive to donate to the food pantry, which I’m hoping to do again this year.”
I also interviewed Remi Marks, president of Mental Health Awareness Club. “I really want to spread awareness of mental health around the school and leave an impact this year,” they said. “We want to stop the stigma around mental health and have the information about it be more accessible. We also want this club to be a place where people can come to
decompress. I understand that school can be stressful and sometimes you just need a break.”
By the time this article is published, the inaugural Club Day of this school year will have come and gone, as I’m sure any student reading this would know. However, if you just can’t wait, there are several clubs that meet weekly, or are extensions of a larger extracurricular. And even if your club doesn’t fall into either of those categories, Club Day happens monthly, so the next one is always right around the corner.
