Spirit week is a great opportunity to bring out school spirit in a fun and creative way. Usually SCA comes up with a whole week of themes for each day to bring out awareness for a topic or just for fun, celebrating the holidays or a sporting event. The first spirit week BHS had this year was the week of October 12, to October 20, to celebrate the homecoming spirit. As everyone planned their fancy formal outfits for the homecoming dance, they also got to feel the excitement throughout the entire week. It included a cozy pajama day to start the week off, a creative and collaborative “rhyme without reason day” where students grabbed a few friends to make a group costume with names that all rhymed. Pictured below is “rapper and napper.” Other days included Teen Beach Movie Day, Barbenheimer, BBQ Dad vs. Soccer Mom, and Gold Rush day to celebrate the homecoming football game. During December, the school participated in a fun Taylor Swift themed holiday month! Each day was titled a different Taylor Swift song like “Wildest Dreams,” which was another pajama day. We’ve since had a theme day week for the Christiansburg home game and another to spread awareness for cancer.

While the spirit week itself is to amp up students, its true purpose is to get everybody excited about a sporting event at the end of the week. For the fall season, spirit days were aimed at rousing the student body for the Friday night lights football games. This succeeded in setting the tone for the big game, allowing students and players to shuck off some steam after the long week. Themes of spirit days normally match the theme of the game itself, such as Wild West or Neon. During the sporting event, there is a section of bleachers that is reserved for the student body, known at Blacksburg as the “Bruin Den.” The themes work to unite the student section, as on game days it is a force of unanimous color or topic. As seen in the picture, the student section dressed up to the theme “White Out.” Not only is spirit week exciting for the game, but it gives an outlet for students to have fun with their outfits. Students often meet up before sporting events to get ready together, amplifying the atmosphere of excitement. The spirit week is important because it creates memories for Blacksburg High School students. But, just as prevalent, is the game day that spirit weeks lead up to where students can unify to be an exciting crowd.
