The Blacksburg Bruins Football Team took on the Floyd County Buffaloes this past Friday. Both teams were 0-2 going into this game and seeking their first win of the season. Blacksburg went out there with high hopes and played one of their best games in 3 years. The Bruins won not by just one touchdown but three in their 40-14 win. With this victory, the Bruins snapped their 29-game losing streak which will be seen as monumental for the team and the school. We spoke with a couple of the players to get their opinions on the Bruin win.
First, we talked with linebacker Thomas Boyd (grade 11). Boyd told us, “We’ve played our best game in 3 years.” “We worked well as a team and are glad we beat the streak”. Boyd and the rest of the defense played an outstanding game with a decent amount of turnovers and some key stops on 3rd down. Although being scored on twice, the defense rallied together to shut down Floyd.
We also talked with O line/ D line Bennett Niemeira (grade 11). Niemeira said, “The team finally came together and executed their best football and now we know how to win a football game which is the best step for the future of Blacksburg Football”. Niemeira had a huge role in last Friday’s game as he was a big part of the offense’s success. He did a great job protecting quarterback Ethan Karpa allowing them to make some amazing plays. On the defensive side, Niemeira still had an amazing game. He brought good pressure to the quarterback causing him to slip up on multiple plays and locking down the Floyd offense.
Lastly, we talked with Athlete and Captain Luke Poff (grade 12) who has played great in the past 3 games with one of the best being last Friday. Poff told us, “I felt a big weight was lifted off my shoulders knowing that I was part of the team that finally ended the streak.” “I think this was one of the best games we have played.” Poff playing on both sides of the ball, looked like an all-star in all four quarters. Poff scored one touchdown and had multiple receptions while also being named the “Offensive Player Of the Week” for Blacksburg. On defense, Poff had many pass breakups and tackles while locking down receivers leading to the main cause for a struggling Floyd offense.
All the coaches, players, staff, fans, and students are glad about the Bruin win and being part of something special. Although snapping the streak and winning the game is exciting, the Bruins must get back into practice and start preparing for Friday’s game against Rockbridge County. Whether it is players and coaches practicing plays or fans practicing their chants. Everyone is excited about what the Bruins season will bring now as they get ready for a potential 2nd win.
