The exterior of the cafe features two large, striking murals that have quickly become local landmarks. These murals, with bold colors and abstract designs depicting 2 cats smoking and a large ethereal looking owl, reflect the creative energy that flows through the town. "I walk by here every day, and these murals always catch my eye," said Sarah T, a local shopping. "They really add to the artistic vibe of Blacksburg and make this area feel even more vibrant."
A Burst of Color at the School of Visual Arts:
One of the most noticeable displays of art in downtown Blacksburg is the mural on the side of the School of Visual Arts building. This mural features a series of colorful circles, each blending into the next in a spectrum of vibrant hues. These murals are part of an anti-graffiti campaign led by Kim Kirk, Blacksburg's Neighborhood Service Coordinator. The alley, which stretches to Draper Road, is filled with vibrant paintings that range from whimsical to profound. One mural depicts a man holding an umbrella, while another shows a woman in a striking black and white dress.
HokieBird Statues: A Nod to Tradition:
As you continue exploring, you’ll come across several statues of the HokieBird, Virginia Tech’s beloved mascot. These statues are scattered throughout downtown, each one uniquely designed and decorated. They were installed as part of the Gobble De Art project, a public art initiative that began in 2006. The artwork’s consistent color scheme of orange, white, and black ties together the town’s history with its vibrant present.
