Hoco: Behind the Scenes

Blacksburg High School will be holding its 2024 homecoming dance on October 12 from 7:00 to 10:00. This year’s theme is Night in Vegas.

The dance, per tradition, follows BHS’s Friday night football game against Christiansburg at 7:00. The theme is 24 Karat Gold, so students are encouraged to dress to impress. The Bruins, who are coming off  back-to-back wins, will look for revenge against a Blue-Demon squad that have come up victorious in the last five meetings between these teams. Both teams will enter the field with three wins, so prepare for an entertaining clash in the Battle of the Burgs. The temperature low will be 41 degrees on Friday, so make sure to dress appropriately.

Preceding the game is the annual BruinFest. This will take place in the bus loop from 4:30 to 6:30 and will be the host of a magnitude of fun events. National Honor Society officers and members have organized clubs around the lot, live music, a petting zoo with goats, and even a bouncy castle. For any questions, please contact Zander Krisch (zanderkrisch@mcps.org) for more information.

One difference students might notice compared to last year is a change in the Homecoming court. The process last year involved self nomination, followed by a vote from students for their respective grade. While the format is the same this year (court representatives for each grade) an interesting twist will be a peer nomination system -- that is, others will nominate an individual who will then have to agree to be on the nomination list. Then, in the traditional student-government format, each class will vote (Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors will get four on the court, Seniors will get six). I asked an SCA member about this, to which she explained that there was concern about students not wanting to appoint themselves.

The highly anticipated dance has been in the works for quite a while -- longer than the morning announcements or emails have been produced. The president of SCA, Radia Lu, walked me through this process. The student council association, composed of students in all grade levels, are the primary group in charge of setting up and executing the homecoming dance and events prior. When I asked Radia when they started planning, she immediately said August.

“It was the first major project we worked on in the school year.”

The counsel then voted for a theme, in which A Night in Vegas narrowly ousted Mamma Mia and Tangled.

Radia also gave me the inside scoop about what the dance floor will look like. She walked me through the decorations, including foil balloons and dice. One unique feature will be games in the auxiliary gym. That’s right, there will be games during homecoming for casino night! How cool is that? Radia and the SCA Vice President, Adhana Costa, explained that there will be five poker tables, all monitored by a variety of teacher volunteers. Prizes will include Starbucks merchandise and a variety of gift cards

Finally, I asked them what went well in last year's dance that they want to recreate, as well as what they would like to change. After some thought, Lu confessed that the “lights were pretty cool”, and to be honest, I would have to agree. The dim lights did a great job complimenting the disco theme, so look for a similar approach this year. Neither officers could think of any major changes that should be made from the previous year, but Costa eventually conceded that they could “do a better job securing the tarp down”.

Regardless of if you are going alone, with friends, or with a date, make sure to come out to Blacksburg High School for Homecoming on Saturday. The SCA has done a really good job organizing and setting up the event. The games and decorations should make Homecoming a fun event to look back on when commemorating the high school years.
