-Intro-

For many students, Spirit Week, Homecoming, Prom, and other fun events are some of the only redeemable qualities of high school, but not everyone takes the time to think about what makes these events possible. It's clear to anyone that a lot of hard work goes into things like Homecoming or Prom, but who actually puts the effort into making them come to life? Blacksburg High School’s Student Council is the group behind these major events, and they plays a large role in the planning and execution of them. The SCA is a group comprised of students from each grade level that are dedicated to making our school a better place. Without the efforts of our Student Council, BHS wouldn’t be the same.

-How To Join-

Anyone with the desire to become a representative of our Student Council is encouraged and welcomed to run. SCA president, Radia Lu (12) explains that, “Students can choose to enter the SCA Representative election at the end of the school year, typically in April. Students have to fill out an application that consists of short answer questions, activities, and teacher references. If their application is approved, they are put on the ballot for voting and have the option to campaign for their candidacy.” Ten students from each grade level can be selected as a representative on the student council, and if you put in the appropriate dedication to your campaign, you could be one of them.

-Why Join?-

It is without a doubt that being a representative of the Student Council comes with a great deal of responsibility, and the requirement of putting in effort. This may be a concern to people who want to run, but already suffer from a heavy workload and after school activities, which may make them wary about campaigning. However, there are so many things that make the hard work and dedication worth it. Upon interviewing various members of SCA it is clear to me that running for BHS’s Student Council is worth your while. Student Council member Abigail DeJesus (9) says, “I wanted to join because I wanted to help out around the school for my classmates and friends. I love setting up for events like Homecoming and Prom and helping people like during the Thanksgiving baskets.  Similarly, member Hadley Teaster (10) says, “I wanted to join SCA so I could be more involved with our school and because I know many people who do it. My favorite things about SCA are bonding with the other members and helping at events.” If you’re giving thought to running for SCA but are on the fence about it, make sure to take these two current member’s opinions into consideration.

-Still Not Sure?-

While campaigning for SCA isn't a decision you should take lightly, it also isn't something that you should stress too much about. To anyone still struggling with their decision to campaign, here is some advice from a recent member of SCA, Neda Jantzen (9). When asked to give advice to anyone wanting to join SCA, she says,  “I’d say go for it, you have to be elected, so if you’re up for the challenge, do it. SCA is really fun and most meetings are short so it's compatible with sports. At times throughout the year, though, you’ll be putting in a lot of hours for SCA  on a particular project, so be prepared for that. You also have to be willing to step out of your comfort zone at times, but I feel like it’s pretty rewarding.”

-Conclusion-

In conclusion, SCA is a group that does a great deal for our school, and is an excellent way to gain experience in leadership, teamwork, and communication, while also making a positive impact on your community. Without the dedication and effort put in by the Student Council, students of BHS wouldn’t be granted the same high school experience.
